Through the Discovery Barn
Each summer, the Pipestone Discovery Barn brings
farm life to the fairgrounds, giving thousands of families
a chance to experience modern agriculture up close.
At the Sioux Empire Fair in Sioux Falls, SD, along with
other county and state fairs throughout the region, the
Discovery Barn continues to be a highlight for visitors of
all ages.
In 2025 alone, the Discovery Barn featured:
• 13 sows farrowed, with more than 160 piglets born
at the fairs
• Opportunities to see and learn about wean pigs, a
milk cow, bottle calves, and chicks
• Over 100 volunteers who answered questions, led
activities, and shared farm experiences across nine
locations
Families don’t just walk through the barn—they
experience it. From watching piglets being born to
learning how farmers care for livestock, children and
parents can participate in hands-on demonstrations,
activities, and interactive displays. These moments
connect consumers to the people and practices behind
their food while showcasing the care and dedication
farmers bring to their work every day.
By opening the barn doors, Pipestone is proud to share
the story of farming with the next generation and help
bridge the gap between farm families and fairgoers.
